    Newb question - seating primers

I noticed that during my 1st reloading session that when I seated primers with my RCBS hand tool that they looked to be a little deep. I'm using once fired Hornady 6.5 Grendel brass and CCI 450 primers. I measured them at about .005" below flush. I'm not crushing them in there, just going until they positively stop. They are not deformed in any way. Seems slightly deep but then again I know that they must be fully seated to avoid ignition issues. So I guess my question is: is primer seating depth purely a function of the pocket depth? And if they're too deep, the brass is pretty much trash?

I haven't had a chance to take this ammo to the range yet and honestly I don't expect to have problems with it. From what I've read it seems like .005 is still within the acceptable range but I'd like to hear from some of you with more experience than me (which is pretty much everyone, haha).

As long as your firing pin use in good shape, you should have no issues.

Primers are supposed to be seated 0.004 below flush, so you are right on track.

Keep asking questions, post pictures.... it sparks good honest conversation and may save the person afraid to ask the “newb question”

I agree 1000% The only stupid question is the one you don’t ask and just guess at.

You'll be fine. I remember back when I first started reloading, some of them had to be shot a second time to get ignition because I wasn't seating them with authority. The first firing pin strike finished the seating process and the second went boom.
