COL relation to clean burn on shot

Had been fighting to find a load in a short barrel 243.
Finally found something decent and worked around the load. I had a wee bit of smoke on the shot.
neck sized and loaded next batch to zero in on load specifics .... I also (as a test) moved COL out 50 thou on this batch to see it it would tighten up groups at all.
BAM! Complete burn on shot, made her BARK and much better groups!
kinda surprised that seating out further cleaned up the shot. Learn something new I was unaware of. Found it interesting.

I have no idea what the hell I am doing.
So I just keep shooting. It all works out in the end.

A lot of rifles will shoot better with the bullet seated out , closer to the lands. Glad you got that rifle shooting good.

Just litterally read article.15-20 mins ago talking about this. One thing it was saying was also barrel length that 1 inch could be difference in clean burn off. Or flames out the end from unburned powder. And silencers affect burn off . was article off pew pew tactical

Nice!! Seating out longer can tighten up groups for sure with less free bore jump, and probably allowed the powder a bit longer to get burning before the bullet got into the rifling.
Glad you got it figured out. That is the fun of reloading for me is when something needs to be solved.
No better feeling than working through it, and cracking that nut

I have adjusted COL for more serious stuff. Hunting rifles I have always just seated to factory spec 95% of the time. I may take this adjustment a bit more seriously from here on out. Surprised the shit out of me that the load completely changed behavior. Very happy with results.
