    Lead Weights

I have the opportunity to purchase boat lead from a company that dismantles and recycles boats.
He's selling it at $1.25 per pound and has over 3000 pounds.
I imagine I'll need to find a way to determine the composition of the lead.

Is this a good going rate for lead?
Are there any concerns I should have regarding boat weights?

    Thanks!

The last bunch of lead I bought came out to $2.20/lb shipped for 50lb each pure and linotype.

As to the composition, I'd have to imagine it would be close to pure lead.

I want to start casting so I'm still pretty new and trying to research as much as I can.

But it sounds like this might be worth it to pick up a pound or hundred since it's a good price.

It’s probably pure lead. Try to scratch it with your fingernail. If you can put a scratch in it, it’s pretty pure. Depending on what you are casting, it may not be a good alloy for you. It will probably have a hardness of 4-5 bhn. Wheel weight lead is 12-14. I use that for everything I cast but I’m not casting for really fast cartridges. Just 9mm, 45acp, subsonic 300blk, 38spl. Anything else I reload for, I just buy fmj’s because I don’t want to get into trying to hardening my lead. If it’s pure and you’re into round-ball shooting, buy all you can afford. Then buy a little more.

I would only be casting for pistol so 9mm and 45ACP. I think it should be good enough since it would just be for plinking.

Thanks! I may start with a small 10 pound weight and see how it forms and shoots.
If it's good quality, then I'll buy more.

I think you’ll have real leading issues with the 9mm especially.

Powder coat and it won’t make much difference.
