Does it need to specifically be a taper crimp or can you just use the Lee FCD?

Depends on the cartridge. Revolver cartridges like .357 mag, .44 mag, and .45 colt get a roll crimp, auto pistol cartridges like 9x19, .380 acp, and .45 acp usually get a taper crimp as well as rifle. The lee fcd die for rifles uses the collet, and the pistol lee fcd dies use the appropriate type of crimp for the cartridge. At least in my experience. Loaded some .45 colt earlier for my dad and gave them a nice deep roll crimp with his lee fcd die.
