Ive loaded for 45-70 for probably 25 years. Ive mostly loaded jacketed bullets on the high end with lever action and ruger #1 data, with great success. Ive got a hankering to dust my old H&R buffalo classic out and start playing with her again. Ive got a great load with 500gr cast bullets for this rifle, but was thinking I’d like to go with a 405gr cast bullet this time around. I’d like to keep pressures in the trapdoor realm even though the rifle can handle hotter. I’m not looking for an anemic target round, but something good for hunting that I will plink with too. What powder and 405gr cast bullets have you guys had good performance with in the lighter loads?
