    Reloading modern lever action 45-70

I just started to reload some 45-70 loads for my Henry 45-70 and I used the hogdon sight to look up bullet weight/measurements wich powder to use ect ect .
My load is as follows .
Using hogdon H4198 with 55gr powder and a 300 gr bullet (sierra pro hunter hp/fn and cci large rifle no. 200 .
This is what the hogdon site suggests , but when I use this load and fit the bullet the powder is touching the back of the bullet .
Is this a correct load or does hogdon have it wrong ?

It's fine. There are other loads out there that actually compress powder. Trust me, Hodgdon wouldn't put any load on their website that was dangerous, because they could be sued. In fact, you will find that loads for the same cartridge and bullet combo have been reduced in recent years for that reason. If you know someone with a 20 year old Hodgdon book, they can show you the difference between that and the website.

Take a look at the Hodgdon site. Look for the part that gives info for reduced loads using H4895 ONLY.
For example: You can reduce the 350gr load by 60% which will drop it down from 59grs to about 34grs.
That will give you a fairly light load that wont beat you up too bad. Then go back to full power for hunting.
I have more H4895 on my shelf than any other powder.
