So I'm going to be reloading .223 fairly soon on my Dillon 650 in the very near future for my AR is it really that important to case trim for plinking ammo or is that more so just for precision.

If you're going to reload I would advise not cutting corners on anything. Would be a bad habit to get in. All my .223 gets the treatment, target or not.

Well I guess it's time for me to convince the other half to let me buy a good case trimmer. Or so all the brass I have built up and buy some fully processed brass from Wes

I really do appreciate my Giraud case trimmer whenever I'm trimming a batch of .223 (upwards of 2k cases), a little pricey but it sure can knock out a lot of cases in a hurry and as already stated above, all cases gets the same treatment whether it's plinking, hunting or precision ammo.
The giraud tri-way works great too if you're on a budget. Chuck it up in a drill and have at it.

Use a case gauge. If if extends out the bottom, trim it. If it doesn't leave it be. Too short is not an issue typically. Too long can be. You can also use the gauge to make sure the shoulders are set to spec or need to be bumped back more, or loosen the die to not bump the shoulders as far.
