A short barreled 338 Win Mag should make an outstanding bear rifle...

I just posted my above because at my older age I like to see guns that are different.
I have just about owned it all and/or shot it all. To me . . . something different is good.
Example: Know anyone else that has a 10ga "carbine" ?? --- SAWMAN :-)

Lots of friends at my gun range. The day I got it built I told them when I would be out to sight it in.
When I showed up,not one person in sight. Some guy with his 14 year old grandson wanted him to shoot it but I refused.
A 766gr slug at >1200fps is a little much even with a P.A.S.T. on my shoulder. NOW . . . can't find anyone with a big hog problem. ---- SAWMAN

    338 Win Mag

I use 225gr Nosler partition using 73gr of RL19 putting it around 2750fsp. The recoil is less than most factory rounds I have used and it’s accurate. This load was made for my Ruger M77. I have tried other loads in it but is one that it seems to like.

Thinking about puting a Houge Stock on it and converting it to a drop box magazine. The swapping the scope to a good 3-9 and using it for a brush/truck gun.

Or use the existing action, re-barrel it and mount it on some sort of long range stock.

I have a few lever guns that are great brush guns.

Sounds like you're doing fine, as it is.
The one thing I have to offer. I had a Howa 1500 338wm for awhile. In a Hogue stock. I never could get it to shoot to my liking. The Hogue stock flexed so much on the bench, it was never happy. FWIW.
