I'm trying to understand how to identify the difference in hulls. I've read the manual a few times and understand the base wads are thicker and less space but still not clicking I guess you'd say. Any advice?

Do you have a Lyman manual? They have a section on the different hulls with a cross section of each one.
Years ago, when I started loading shotshells, I went as far as cutting a case in half in order to compare it to the drawings in Lyman’s manual.
