She is finally getting her CPL and I am wondering what to get her. It will be her every day carry but also used when hiking on trails in the woods.
I'm thinking 9mm or 40
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Find a small shop that has used guns to try that also has a range don’t know what state your in. I’m in Mn and my local shop let’s you try any used gun you want no range fee and ammo is cheap

Rub some dirt on it and get back in the fight
First I'd let her hold a few pistols and let her decide which 2 feels the best to her. Then try one pistol that's 40 and 9mm. Once she's deciding which caliber she can handle try the other one in that caliber.

Consider a 9mm Browning High Power. It has s slender grip more suitable for smaller hands, and more comfortable to carry. At the same time it has large enough mag capacity. Also it is more affordable to shoot with the lower ammo cost. She will likely need as much practice as she can get. But the gun is not cheap, it is a Browning after all.
Big Eddy
Not big and tall but big and round
Has she done any handgun shooting?
Received any instruction from someone who knows how to teach handgun skills?
Does she have a preference for semi-auto or revolver?
A lot of new shooters have trouble with semi auto pistols. A lot of new shooters have trouble controlling a 9mm, let alone a 40 cal pistol.
How 'bout easing her into it, letting her shoot a good 22 pistol? Learn the basics, and grow from there.
I teach a lot of new handgun shooters, and a common problem is starting with a gun that's difficult for a newbie to control.
Let her help in the selection process. Be patient.

She does shoot my brothers super Blackhawk 44 mag and has shot my 9mm and my 10mm. None of those are "compact"
My 9mm is a Ruger SR9c and she does not care for it.
She wants semi auto with enough power to pack a punch but small enough to easily conceal.
