    270?

My boss wants to try some reloads for hunting deer. He normally just buys whatever factory he can get. What's the best bullet for a 270. I'm gonna help him load some on my press. This is gonna be his first time reloading and I wanna make sure he has a good experience doing it with good results.

Factory rounds I absolutely LOVE the Corelokts. They make them for reloading as well, but they are expensive. My second best is the Hornady SST. Highly accurate, a good clean kill. But I prefer my CoreLokts. 150 grain, dropped a black bear within 100 yards. One shot took both lungs, heart and liver, and the exit wound was smaller than the entry. Little meat damage, but yet still a fast, effective kill.

What ranges will he be hunting at?

For deer I would look at the 110gr or the 130gr Barnes TSX bullet. Either one will be fine for White Tail or Mule Deer. I would be comfortable in taking game with either bullet out to 300 to 400 yards.

The 130gr isn’t a bad choice for Elk or Moose as long as you do your part though the 150 grain TSX would be the safer choice.

I was looking in my book and was guessing either a 140 or 150gr bullet. Thanks for the advice.

I know he wants to make longer shots. So far he's shot up to 300yards

If he’s wanting to reach out, you might look at the TTSX bullets. I believe the have them in 110, 130 and 150gr.

For longer ranges check out the LRX 129gr. They’ve had some great result pushing 500 to 600 yards with that bullet.

For whitetail my favorite bullets are 130gr hornady spire point or Nosler partition, Over IMR or H4831.

IMO go with a lower weight bullet. No need to get up to the 150's. But pick the right bullet.
As stated above take a look at the Barnes TSX/TTSX and the lowerweight NosPart's. If you can find something to your likeing in the 120-135gr range, that would be my pick.
Remember also, the lower weight bullets will be faster, giving a slight ballistic edge.
Also . . . the Barnes 110gr. TSX works wonders on the larger Fla. hogs (230lbs+) at the 6.8SPC vels. If not driven top end, wondering how it would kill deer at 270Win speeds. --- SAWMAN
ADDED - - -> Hornady also makes a "no lead" type of bullet called GMX. I have no expierance with these though.

Why just dance when you can "rock and roll".
