Loading your own defense ammo.

What are you guys doing to test your defensive ammo to ensure it performs adequately? I would like to load my own defensive ammo, but want to make sure it will perform well. I have a chronograph that I can use. Are you just trying to find out what groups well at a high enough velocity for it to properly expand?

Velocity is important for expansion. I've been playing around with homemade ballistics gel. Water jugs work well, wet newspaper or magazines work also.

I do the wet newspaper,phone books,and magazines. At some point I'm gonna try ballistic gel.
