Jay, thanks so much for running this. I don't know if I'll ever have the nerve to try, but I now have more information than I had before. My hope has been to acquire a Ruger convertible 45 Colt/45ACP gun and try it out in that first. We shall see.

You might look at the Lehigh Defense website. They sell some solid copper 120gr bullets for 45 ACP. You will want to analyze it carefully since it could be an apples to oranges since copper bullets are typically longer, but since theirs are flat points and yours are deep hollow points and 5 gr heavier, it could be useable data.

I think a revolver would be a fine choice for this load. You won’t have the potential feeding issues a snubby load like this could have in say a 1911.

That and you can work up the load without worrying about trying to get the gun to cycle. You’ll want to be careful about squibs, but that’s always a concern.

The thing that can get you into trouble with monolithic is the higher engraving force. Yes the shank is typically longer for a given weight but the material hardness is what can get you in trouble.

QuickLOAD compensates for this using offsets for different types of bullet construction.

Yeah. Luckily in this case that isn't an issue I don't think. The only powders that line up between the 2 are Power Pistol. QuickLoad is running 11.2 gr max. Lehigh Defense is running 10.2 gr Max and 10.7 gr max for +P.

I've got another odd one for you... I picked up some solid copper 185 gr bullets meant for a 50 GI, but I want to load them in my 500 Auto and possibly my 500 S&W revolver. I put a few of them on my scale and they actually weighed 180.0 gr +/- 0.1.

    Cartridge: 500 S&W
    Weight: 180gr
    COAL: 1.975"
    Bullet Length: 0.601"
    Bullet Diameter: 0.500"
Barrel Length: 18" for the AR10 and 6.5" for the Revolver

No problem. I just assumed you were busy.

Thanks for the data! I was hoping to break 3000 fps but looks like I'll have to settle for 2900. Still smoking.

Not sure if I will shoot it in the revolver. I got thinking about it after I asked and I foresee the possibility of top strap cutting like the guys shooting high velocity 125 gr bullets in 357 Maximum.

Yikes, yeah I hadn't thought of that. These rifle pressure revolver magnums rounds kinda have a reputation for being hard on top straps to begin with...a light bullet isn't going to help with that.
