How fast do you need to have the bullet going,at what distance ??
All this talk about the "magical" 1000yds kinda makes me laugh. Talking 1300,1400,etc,etc. makes me laugh out loud. This . . UNLESS . . we're just talking punching paper for the fun of it.
Hunting - - -> How will any given bullets terminal performance be at the farther ranges. How about at "just/only" 600yds not to mention 1000yds+. Will it have the energy of a 22mag ?? Will it penetrate and expand like a M855 ??
Then we have the laws of deminishing returns. IOW . . overbore chamberings and felt recoil. The PRC's come to mind. As does the 6.5-300Wby,26Nosler,and some other of the "new and better" chamberings. A good "whack" on the shoulder and a quickly burned out barrel is worth . . . what ?? --- SAWMAN
Question: What wont the 308Win do. --- SAWMAN
I have no desire to hunt long range. Maybe medium range at most if the rifle, ammo and I can reliably do it. I've never shot game passed 250 yards because I don't like risking wounding animals.

This will be for mostly punching paper at long distances. My local range goes out to 1100 yards and another nearby range goes out to 1500.
