I run 200gr extreme round nose over AA#2 or W231 for plinking. Higher end load so it's clean and functions well.
Defense load. 200gr gold dot over 12gr VV N105 in nickel starline brass. That load isn't for the faint of heart in an M&P shield 45.

I am a newbie here and I don't know if I am at the right place to ask questions, BUT>

So here is my first question:
Can it be determined what size pistol primer is needed for 45acp by looking at the hole size at the interior base of the case? I have seen three different size holes at the bottom. One is tiny, the next is a little bigger and the third is the largest. Can I assume that the largest takes the "large pistol primers" and the tiny takes the "small pistol primers"? The middle guy baffles me all to hell.

Small Pistol Primer on the top Large Pistol on the bottom. The inside diameter of the small pocket is 0.175" and the large is 0.208

So then the hole size through which the primer charge ignites the powder plays no part in determining what size pistol primer to use, I guess?
You would have to deprime each case to determine what size primer is needed for that individual case?
Or is there some way to determine that without depriming first.

I have found Some of the primers in the case can be easily seen as being large and others as small and then some not so easily determined.

I just look at the cases. I guess after loading so many I have gotten used to the size difference. As for the flash hole, no it does not determine the primer size. And as you said, you would have to deprive the case before being able to tell.

The flash hole is just the flash hole, that is it. The actual size of the primer pocket, looking on the outside at the base, will be your determination of which primer to use.
