Glad we don't have them here, so I can't be much help.
Not sure that anything you use to stop them from eating you would be good in the woods.
May smell and scare off other critters too.
Hopefully someone has an answer though
Permethrin is your friend. I work in the woods on a daily basis and actually have my pants professionally treated in the spring and it works all summer. I don’t send in my camo but do spray it down liberally and let dry overnight before wearing. Rarely find a tick or chigger bite. Before I started treating I would get anywhere from 3 to 30 ticks attached each day all summer.
