Are the 41 primers "necessary" for an AR or just recommend. I just made up some ladders for my AR using 400.

Respectfully I say - - -> You would also be surprised at the number of AR owners that have never (EVER !!) expieranced a slamfire while using "normal" (CCI 400 and etc.) primers.

Who has experienced a slam fire with a properly seated standard small rifle primer? Anyone here? I have never seen it happen.
CCI #41 primers are made to military specifications. A bunch of hoo-ha about nothing if you ask me.
And my first thought is . . . was that primer seated a little high.
.003" could make a difference I would think. Is the finer workings of the BCG within specs ?? No worn parts ?? None with a manufacturing defect ??
My point is . . . there is a lot of things that could cause or contribute to the cause of a slamfire besides the thickness of the primer. --- SAWMAN
Right, no point muddying the waters with a bunch of what ifs. The original question was, does it make a significant difference using 400's or 41's? And for that I would say no. It's personal preference. Both function perfectly well.

Yep,and your vels and groups will pretty much stay the same. --- SAWMAN
I have loaded and shot thousands of rounds of 223 using standard small rifle primers(mostly Winchester but others as well) and never had an issue. If is was shooting a full auto I might want to use #41s but I don't so I don't worry.
With the muzzle pointed to the ground, fully pull the charging handle to the rear and let go, eject the unfired cartridge, look at the dimple on the primer.
No worries, just wonder.
Just a couple from an AR15 platform.
The M1A and AR10 will do the same.
