    41 Magnum

I have a 6.5” Ruger Blackhawk 41 Magnum. Up until now Ive only ever shot 7.5-8.0gr of unique with 215gr cast SWC bullets. I wanted to put together a hunting load for it with 210gr XTP’s. Using the Hornady manual, I chose loads that were supposed to be going 1250fps and loaded up 6 of each. They included 14.7gr AA No7, 17.0gr AA No9, 18.4gr 2400, 21.1gr H110, and 20.5gr IMR4227 (max load 1200fps). The results were interesting. 2400 shot the best and were going 1398fps. AA No7 and IMR4227 shot well, but not as good as 2400. AA No7 was 1338fps and 4227 was 1264fps. AA No9 and H110 were the least accurate of the 5 loads. AA No9 was 1317fps and H110 was 1407fps.

I haven’t decided exactly which direction I am going to go next but I think I’m going to play around some more with 2400.

Since 18.4gr of 2400 gave good accuracy and velocity with the 210gr XTP, I decided to load up some more with 2400.

18.4gr of 2400, starline brass, federal LG Pistol Magnum primers, 1.580” yielded an average of 1398fps.
Keeping everything else the same, I loaded 18.0gr and 17.6gr.
My goal is to tighten the group a bit but keep velocity above 1300fps.

I was able to shoot my 18.0gr and 17.6gr of 2400 with the 210gr XTP today. 18.0gr was more accurate than the 18.4gr load and had an average muzzle velocity of 1378fps. The 17.6gr load gave me a 1.5” six shot group @25yds with an average velocity of 1349fps. I think I’m going to stick with the 17.6gr load.
