Cartridge for .44 CF in a colt saa

I have a colt saa from the 1880s based on sn. It is marked .44cf doing research i found that colt had the 44 colt, and 44-40/ 44wcf. There is alspo the concern of the 44 remington. But i cant find which one i need, intent is to get a set of cartridges to shoot light loads once a gs evaluates the pistol. Does anyone have any data chamberings on this as i cannot find good info.

Wow! Great pistol and great question. My understanding ( and I could be waaaay off) is that the 44cf was the 44wcf (44-40) and that colt didn’t want to put the “W” for Winchester on their guns. Since you are taking it to the gunsmith to get a clean bill of health, he should be able to tell you what it is chambered for too.

It could even be a 44 Russian ......

    The 44-40 is a tapered almost necked like a 38-40 .

Then there's a straight cased 44 .... I want to say Colts that was a CF version of the Henry RF and used a .440 heeled bullet , think 22 LR for a visual . This one will be drilled straight through at about .440-.444 .

The Russian had the .440 case but used the now standard .426 dia bullet as they wanted an inside lubed bullet vs the heeled bullet outside lubed type . This one will have a straight case with a throat step . I don't when off hand the Russian came about .

This doesn’t make it gospel truth, but it’s something.

Found out about the russian yest, it was a later production. Guess ill order some 44-40 brass or snap caps and see if they fit. Played with cylinder last night, gap might be excessive so i may not get to shoot it.

It was designed for BP , larger clearance for fouling . Modern copies run .004-.006 cylinder gaps for C&B . Up to .008 isn't unusual . The head space is a greater concern and the cylinder can be shimmed to get the endplay travel out and headspace down . As long as the cylinder and barrel line up it should be ok . As a rule a barrel set back doesn't seriously damage value . If parts are replaced keep the OM parts with it .
