Hi, my name is Larry and I'm an addict. Prairie Dogs!

How do you approach this task? (It's become something other than a sport or hobby.)

I started out with (and still take) a Caldwell Stable Table.

I just bring sand bags and lay on the ground.

Prone is my fave but I carry a 5Gal bkt and tripod for when terrain isn't favorable. Move 2-4 miles a day trying to keep my shots < 300yds for efficiency. Ammo, water, jacket, magazines etc, in the bkt.

The ones we have around here are skittish and over hunted. I rarely go. One shot and they are gone for 30 minutes

We have only hunted prairie dogs on private land. We drive up to the edge of a field, grab our home made shooting benches out of the truck, and commence with the shooting. We start with close ones and as they get skittish, we stretch it out a bit. I would say the majority of our shooting is between 300-600yds.

Fun shooting but I'm not as efficient out that far. Longest hit so far was 523yds.
One ranch I shot last year, some PDs had moved to a new area and those were skittish while the rest were normal. No idea why.
I've found if I keep them under ground all day, about 4pm they are too thirsty to stay down. "Magic hour."

Would that be magic hour or happy hour? Either way it sounds like fun.

Well, it's "happy hour" since we learned why it happens. B4 that it seemed like magic.
