I'm reloading .380 for the first time. I've reloaded shotgun, .357 and .308 previously.
100gr RNFP from Xtreme
OAL 0.98
CCI 500 SPP
Hand priming with Lee auto prime with the round disk.
When shooting out of my Taurus Spectrum the primer only gets a small dimple and fails to ignite. Tried two different rounds.
However factory Federal Premium HST with an OAL of .93 fired right afterwards.
Loaded up one more round. This time using Winchester SPP. No problem.
I was going to suggest a different primer. In my experience, CCI primers have the hardest cup. Glad you figured it out.

Now what to do with about 200 CCI primed .380 cases...
Deprime them and put Winchesters in them. Easy peasy.

More than likely they will. Just load up 5 or 6 at first, to make sure.

Always check: My recent experience has me thinking it's more of a reloading problem here than strictly a primer problem. That had to do with a "double action only" small auto. Runs great if everything is right. High primers can shut the little gun down. I was shooting a Smith 19-5. Several high primers slowed the shooting down. It's necessary to look to see what happened. A ring in the barrel makes a bad day. By reputation Federal's primers are the softest.
One trick I was shown back in the day had to do with high primers. High primers can be confused with light strikes. I was shown how to run my index across the head the loaded round. It was surprising to to find how well that worked.
Invested in a simple inertial puller. First time I've used one in 30+ years of reloading. Easy. I don't have the volume to justify a collet puller and I may use this on cast lead someday.
Careful depriming got those CCI's out. I'll try them in my .357.
Replacing them with Winchester SPP's worked like a champ.
