What is your favorite Lump Charcoal to use? Where do you get your best deals? For me, I use Royal Oak Lump as I can get 15# on sale at HD for less than $10/bg. On really special cooks I may go FOGO just because of the larger chunks. As for wood, Pecan, Hickory and Apple are my go to. I catch them on sale at Academy. Wished I had a cheaper local source in DFW...

Any idea how much wood a "Stack" is compared to a bag?
Wes and I have made charcoal from Alder, Aspen, Apple and even sagebrush
sitting around campfires. It's incredibly easy to do.
I use Kingsford briquettes and plum or pear wood.
I like Cowboy brand with Royal Oak a close second.
How do you make charcoal? I have never looked up how to make your own.Quote:

I've went through at least a dozen bags of Royal Oak because of $10 per bag when on sale at Home Depot. Last time I bought 4 bags and it was the same Made in USA as is usual. You have to watch that, occasionally they will have foreign suppliers help out when needed. These last USA bags have had more tiny pieces and dust than ever before. They were really pretty bad. If the last two are as bad as the first two I'll give Rockwood a try. I have to order it where I'm at. Cowboy is like a fireworks show and tastes like crap. Never again.... :(
