Crimped primer pockets

I ordered a couple 308 package deals from Wes a while back. Ended up with 222 pieces of hornady 308 brass that had crimped primer pockets. I’ve never dealt with crimped primer pockets before, so I have no special tool or provision to take care of it. I ended up using my case mouth debuting tool on the primer pockets, and it worked great. The primers slide right in like butter, and I removed minimal material from the brass. I think if you have small batches of brass every once in awhile this is easy to do, but if you are doing thousands of brass on a regular basis you would definitely need a better way. Just thought I’d share this with the group.

Yep, that was the old way and just getting by in a pinch method. Now full blown swaging tools are available.
I am still stuck on the old Lyman military crimp reamer with an all thread coupler with a drill.

I just figured this out myself a couple days ago. I tried the pocket reamer I have and it wasn't working. Then I tried the Phillips bit trick. Helped, but still wasn't enough. Took my case reamer and cleaned up a little over 300 cases in about an hour. Primed all of them with absolutely no problem.

I thought about buying something made for it, but this was the first time I’ve ever had to do these and I will probably not have to do them again, so Opted for not getting a new tool that I probably would never use again.

I surly understand you guys not wanting to buy a tool that is rarely used. However years ago my best friend bought me a Dillon swage for my B-Day. He is a good friend. I don’t use it often but its nice when I need it.

I just bought the Dillon... waiting for it to come in but I’m excited to use it

I pulled the trigger because of the 2500 pieces I have to finish. I’ve been slacking because it’s a pain doing that many with the RCBS tool. Small batches I was fine but now’s the time to start stocking up for me.

You can find a lot of inexpensive brass that has a military crimp, 556, 308, even some 9mm has it-and with the tool, it's easy to remove without damaging the brass or making the primer pocket unusable. Now, for the .50BMG, it was not as easy-had to use a broken primer punch, tapped it in then worked it loose, Then tapped the primer pocket tool I bought which was supposed to remove the crimp using your press-but wasn't strong enough to remove plus damaged some brass. they really don't have a cutter/reamer big enough I've found which is Shallow enough not to bottom out. New info on that, please pass it along.

Interesting, old one looks flatter on top.

The Hornady primer pocket reamer is about $10 per bit or a little under $20 for both. Choose the one you need and chuck it up in an electric drill then go to town.

At first I used the "old timer" method of a pocket knife (box cutter) but quickly learned that the old timers were either crazy, stuck with an inferior method because they didn't have better tools, or both. 100 cases or less convinced me to pony up the 20 bucks. :D

Now look into the "rubber band mod" for the Dillon 600 Super Swager (videos all over youtube). It will really speed up your processing rate when you get it dialed in. I tried it for awhile and then I stumbled on the Leviathan Armory mod which I like a lot better. Unfortunatley, I think Leviathan is no longer producing their kit...hopefully someone will come up with something similar in the future. Great video! Just got my super swager the other day but I finished 2500 pieces of 223 on it in two days! About an hour and a half each day it’s definitely worth the money. Never considered mounting it vertically. I’ve had great luck with how I’ve got it set up.
