Question on an AR10

I bought an AR10 from armalite and the bolt will slam home with the bolt catch engaged if the butt is hit on the ground. Like the bolt catch will release it. There is no mag in the chamber. I know this is normal for AR15 and I thought would be for an AR10 as well but my buddy is saying it’s not?!?!? Any advice.

You might check the bolt catch, make sure there is a spring and a plunger.

Make sure the plunger moves freely.

If it has an oversized bolt release, it could be offering extra advantage when jostled.

Everything I’ve read said it’s normal. Like the jostle moves the bolt which is under pressure from the buffer spring which resets the hold open and it slams home. I tried it on my AR15 and same thing. I think my A2 did in the Marines too but that was 20 yrs ago haha! I get wrapped up in this simple stuff.

It is inertia. When the butt of the gun is hit on the ground,the BCG moves to the rear just enough to take it off the bolt catch (hold open). The bolt catch retracts and the BCG slams into battery (closes).
We used to do this with some of our guns. I did it with my XM177E2 or M16 back in the day.
*Pull charging handle to the rear and engauge bolt hold open (bolt catch).
*Close charging handle.
*Close ejection port cover
*Safety on safe (or fire).
You could either tap the butt of the gun on the ground or hit it with to heel of your hand and the BCG would slam forward.

Thanks a lot. I wonder why some do and some don’t. But I’m glad it’s normal

Put a very small drop of heavy oil on the bolt hold open spring and swivel point. Work it 20 times or so. There should be a clear and fast "snap" to it when you slide your thumb off of it. --- SAWMAN

That was part of what I was saying, if the plunger sticks, then you don’t get max spring to the catch.
