I set up to run some 9mm bullets-Lee 356-125-2R- last night. These are a trial run for a friend who was hunting a bullet that works in his 1911. We also got several options in other molds on hand here. Yesterday was a trial run of Lyman 358311 160gr. RN bullets. Results for that bullet were extremely good using 4grs of Accurate #2. The decision is still pending today on running some more of that bullet. The RN bullet loaded easily into the revolvers from strips and speed loaders. Accuracy is equal to the 358477 155 gr. SWC in target loads. Shortage of components is really starting to hurt any experimentation.
Did the swc bullets feed in his 1911 ok?
The 9mm bullets are today's project. He had one of his store bought bullets keyholing. I'm going to make some water quenched bullets sized .356. 357. Owner of the gun was not a good historian. Therefor, it's gonna be try this and try that. I suspect bullets appropriately hard and right diameter will make all that go away. Owner has not shared any malfunctions with any of the bullets he has tried. Doing this kind of favor is inviting a trip into a rabbit hole.
I had trouble with the 358-125 with the seating depth . One pistol needed them deeper to chamber . Not a lot maybe .01.
Clean , warm mould .
Generally if the bands fail to fill out uniformly it's a dirt issue , usually oil or some protecterant .
If it is unique to the base or parting quadrant it may be a venting issue . Clean the faces and check the cavity for edge burrs that may be obstructing vent lines .
If you have wrinkles/lines/drips on the bullet the usual suspect is a mould not hot enough .
As a last basic test add tin . Like soap added to water it makes the tin "wetter" and breaks surface tension allowing better flow .
Much of this to follow assumes a new iron Lyman mould for terminology , you named a 454242 I'm not familiar with but I know the 454424 well with a copy in both Lyman and NOE .
Advanced issues if all else fails .
The sprue pour hole may be too small for the mould . We're talking about .01s too small here not bust out the fraction drills and open'er up to 1/4" , it's more like a 40-45° chamfer tool and break a line .002-3 wide in the bluing and square off the inside of any raised burrs.
Break the top edge of the mould facing the sprue plate . Do this as a last resort , again we're talking about being able to see the break edge in the bluing .
Aluminum moulds generally don't need to have the top break done but even the best quality examples can have a burr or some other something in a vent line it's been known to be dust .
Thanks for your help with my problem with that 452424 mold. I also have problems transposing numbers-for real. Your post should seriously be a sticky. We are talking about the top band. I may have problems with that mold. The balance of the bullet was filled out.
I was running a converted Lyman mold in a Master Caster at 700 degrees. There is a PID on the machine. The alloy was range scrap running some softer the Lyman #2. The main problem was a the top band. The machine is run slowly with the fan on. The sprue was allowed to cool. The mold had been washed dawn in Dawn before installation in the machine. The sprue plate is standard for Magma molds.
I have most recently made a short run with this alloy making Lyman 358113's. That mold is a vintage four cavity Lyman cast used with a ladle. Ditto with another Lyman 452424 mold cast with a ladle. Zero problems with those bullets.
There were also problems with the bullets sticking.. There are no visible problems with the mold. My thinking is the temperature and/or alloy may also be a problem. I need to start simple and work up to the most complicated. A longer run is planned sometime this week. Following your list without success suggests store bought bullets.:yikes: Thanks again.
I suspect that it may just be residual oil or cutting fluid in the mould .
It usually burns off but not always sometimes it seems to ooze out forever . The iron moulds are made from a very micro porus alloy , I can't remember the name now , but it will hold a lot of oil compared to what the surface looks like anyway . An alcohol bath might help but a couple more runs will most likely fix it also .
I had read for several years about the wonder of the brass mould and what great tools they were . I won't carry on but I was about 2 seconds from sending that little delight on it way .......then it just started working . Now I get the wonder of the brass mould but the start up has ensured that I won't buy a new one again .
I think the problem is with the mold. The cavity that faces me opening machine is the problem. The top ring in that cavity looks to be the source of the bad bullets. Removed from the machine it may be possible to see a problem. Narrowed down it should be easy to figure what to do next. That mold was used when I got it. Mold needs some detective work.
A friend who is a brass mold evangelical gave me two. I have never gotten the NOE HP brass mold work. It's a two cavity hollow point version of the Lyman Thompson bullet-358156. The other remains unused. I'd rather leave them be than risk damage. I don't see the attraction to brass molds. I remain unconverted.
Put together a few extra 7-30 loads tonight. 110gr Speer TNT over RL15.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...655b8d992a.jpg

Man, I’m jealous that you are still working on stuff. My reloading is shut down until after the holidays.

I finally got my Christmas lights up. Haha! Maybe I can get some loading done next week.

I had a great day at the range today. Shot test loads in my 7-30 waters, 22-250, and 300 Blackout. Here are a few of the targets.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...7a7d4136a2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...52589c341c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...146fc96eff.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...719882e723.jpg

I had a little time this morning and finished sizing, necking up, and trimming some 35 whelen brass I got from Wes a while back. I’m getting it ready to fireform into 375 whelen AI. Now that the holidays are over, I’m hoping to have a little more time to get some reloading projects done.

I busted open some range brass I got from Wes a few months ago. I sized trimmed tumbled and primed some FC 257 Roberts brass for my Ruger No1, some WW 257 Roberts brass for my 98 Mauser, and some 30-40 krag brass.
Right now I’m working on a bag of PPU 6mm Rem brass. I’m necking it up to 7mm and then back down to .257, forming a false shoulder so I can fireform them into 257 Roberts Ackley Improved.

I'd love to hear how it shoots for you if you get a chance.
I am not surprised by the Sierra shooting well, is this gun scoped?
Very cool, a fun caliber for the Contender, thanks for the follow up!

This past week I got back into reloading for rifles. I made up some loads for my old 700 SPS in 7mm-08. Recent loading has been with Shooters World Precision Rifle powder and some Speer 130 gr. flat base spitzers. Locally Shooters World is the only powder I can get currently. Powder and bullet combination worked for great accuracy. Next up was some more shooting working up to be SW max loads. The burning is similar to Varget. I have learned to use SW data. That is if there is any SW data. Yes, I know to go to Lovex.
I also shot my Number One A in 30-06. with Precision Rifle and Sierra 165gr BT bullets. I had not shot the rifle since the new crown. These loads were mainly for zero's as the scope had been off the gun. There no choice about getting a Ruger extension rear ring. This ring would cure the sever stock crawling needed to use comfortably a recent Leupold FX-4 scope. Looks like this SW powder will work in this rifle.
I have to be miserly with components. I'll rejoice when this jerking around on loading components is over. I'm about worn out shooting a handgun. Ditto on handgun loading components.:angryfire:
Keep tabs on annual consumption . Stock that going forward times 2-5 when the shelves are full and prices come down .
I use the 1 to try , if it works buy 2 more , when I open the 1st of the 2 I buy 2 more , method . When I get to whatever my target is say 10 for example I buy #11 when I'm using #12 so I have 10 always on hand . It hurts a lot going in but it's sure nice when parts aren't available for going on 2 yr to have enough to hold out for a second term .
Glad you got some good accurate loads with the shooters world powder. I have never tried any myself.
I’m almost ready to start testing loads in my 257 Roberts and 9.3x74R Ruger no1’s. I have to creep on the 257, but on the 9.3 I have a scope with over 4” of eye relief and a long mounting surface, so I’m able to get get a full sight picture without creeping.

Ive been slow at the bench lately. I’m having a new bench being made, and I’m waiting to get all set up before I do any more loading. I picked up a new Frankford M press, and a new Lee turret press to go along with my 30 year old Rock Chucker. I also got a package today with all my In-Line Fabrication stuff for the new bench. Can’t wait to get back at it.
JTD
No loading but I cast a few . About 7-8# worth which would be a lot but I was chewing it 1600 gr at a time in the big 3 hole NOE version of the 458132 Postell at 535 gr per hole . That's just over 4 pours per pound for those counting , throwing the sprues back . I love the mould but it's a single feed deal in the 45-70 1895 . After the operator error and visible defect cull I had 35/48 from 535.2-534.5 gr with no particular groups to suggest any particular cavity .
I poured some 45-500 FP RCBs single , this one only gulps up 1-1/4 oz every pour .
I ended up with 25/32 after culls and 530.8-531.4 gr it is a single but I must be out of practice or something .
I poured a new to me 454424 round groove HP I've had for about yr for the first time . I think there was a little oil in it maybe . I only got 25/35 For keepers . 245.3-246.8 it's for a 45 Colts and Schofield +p+ revolvers so it only needs to be perfect for 50 yd or so .
Also it's not as much fun to cast singles as it used to be fortunately I don't plan on a steady diet of 245 gr HPs in the pistols or 500 gr RNFPs in the 45-70 so that helps me feel better about it .
Put together my first test loads for my 32-40. I can't wait to try them.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...3a510e86bd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...c6d5914d6d.jpg

That is one beautiful rifle, do let us know how it shoots.
I did get the 700 Mountain Rifle running. The major triumph did come at the bench. I had been using Imperial wax to size the Winchester plated brass. It was very hard to size on the best day. Swapped over to the recent RCBS Lube and the problem went away. I have an abundance of plated cases that are once fired. All the others needed to be trashed. Temporary use only with the plated brass.
Also. the hunt for 8mm brass will start shortly. The Husqvarna 260 with FN action is working out very well using PPU bullets. The range pickup PPU brass formed up nicely to 9.3x57.
For the handguns is loading 41 Magnum using the Lee 195 gr. grease grove bullet. The gun is a 1980's vintage Blackhawk. I've got bullets set aside for PC.
