Hey, I have a question. I am not much on identifying actions and such. If I post a picture of my 220 Swift, could you help with identification? It is a Yeager built rifle with a Robert Hart barrel and some sort of Mauser action. TIA.

I’d be more than willing to give it a try. Is there a scope on it? A lot of times the identifiers are under the front scope base.

Ok, Internet is really lumpy right now. Headed out to mow for a while, will post pictures later if I can.
Here are a couple pictures.

Looks like an Interarms Mark X to me except for that safety.
It’s definitely a commercial 98 action. The tell tale signs are no thumb Cut on left side of action for use of stripper clips, no guide on top for stripper clip, and it is drilled and tapped on the right side for a receiver sight.
Secondary signs are the commercial style bolt shroud and thumb safety. These are secondary because they can easily be put on a military action.
I don’t know who made it, but do know it is commercial, not military.

Some years back, she did this a few times for me. Not sure the old man could do it anymore, lol.

I have no idea. If I had to guess I have put 7-8 hundred through it and it was used when I purchased it. I learned a hard lesson with this gun. Shooting on a very hot day in July, some year back a ways, had a case rupture and had to pound the bolt open. Got sprayed in the face and it really got my attention. Gunsmith said it all looked ok, but I had him cut a thread and rechamber it and it continued to shoot just as good after. My "learning the hard way" about upper end loads and heat.
Live and learn. Ive learned many lessons like that.
My first swift started life as a 3/8” grouping rifle. By 2500 rounds it was shooting inch groups. I was very pleased with that performance. Killed many many prairie dogs with it.
JTD
We have a Mk X varminter in 22-250 . It doesn't take upper end loads to run up over pressure in the heat . I bought a 50 pack of the Winchester 45 gr 4000 fps rat exploders and the 9th round with 90 seconds to 2 minutes between shots dropped the primer out . Upon closer inspection 6,7,8 had gas leaks . Hand loads that repeated the events were 3031 and a 55 gr FMJ at about 3600 fps , a down in the middle load way off max load .
I think it has to do with how the Mauser and specifically the 308 length and sub 30 cal heavy barrels shed heat around the chamber . I don't have any test data to back that but the 7&8×57 wouldn't have remained combat rifles from 1895-1957 if it were a common problem there .
I ran a bunch of loads in a short period of time through a Santa Barbara 98 in 358 Win with no issues but the heat of the day was only about 80 degrees . That action was machined OM for a 4" OAL as an action only sale , not in the standard 3.5" Mauser .
It's interesting that you got spray . By WWII the 98 had a gas escape on the front ring and by design most of the gas and debris ended up in the mag well . The bolt shroud , even the slicked up Winchester ish and others , should have deflected whatever made it down the race ways . Unless like me you shoot left handed .......
Thank you all for your input, it does indeed look like it may be a Mark X. I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
I don’t think it’s a problem exclusive to Mausers. Ive had similar problems in remingtons Ruger and Winchesters. As the barrel heats up the round in the chamber gets warmer and can raise pressures. The problem gets even worse when a round is left in a warm chamber for any amount of time, before being fired.
JTD
I didn't mean to imply it was a Mauser exclusive thing , but that I had seen it more in the 300 Savage/308 case lengths in the Mauser actions . Similar strings in 308 , 7×57 , 257 Roberts , and 06' in Savage 110 , Rem 700 , and Win M70 don't seem to do it to such a degree that I've lost primers . That thing in the Carcano was all on me .
Ah ok. Sorry I misunderstood what you were saying.
Ive never lost a primer that way, but I have had some heavy bolt lifts and really flattened primers on loads that were not normally that way. I find it happens more on really fast cartridges, ie 220swift 22-250 etc.

I got to the range Saturday and Sunday this past weekend.
Saturday I spent on the 50yd range and shot my Winchester 94 44 mag, Winchester 94 32 special, Marlin 1895G 45-70, M96 krag 30-40, and long barreled Siamese Mauser 45-70. The 44mag got sighted in very easily, it was shooting great. The 32 special shot exceptionally well, sighted in 1/2” high at 50 and is going 2060fps with 170gr Hornady fn and IMR4064. The marlin 45-70 was shooting 400gr Speer FP, and got a .385” group with IMR3031, .768 with RL7, and .783” with AA2015. I was testing velocities in the krag and was able to get 2121fps with IMR4831 and 180gr Sierra RN. The Siamese Mauser was with 325gr FTX, got 3/4” with AA2015 and just over an inch with RL7. The RL7 load was pushing that 325FTX over 2600fps, WOW!
Sunday I worked at 100yds with 243win, 95gr SST W760, nothing to write home about. 6.5 Creedmoor, 140gr SST W760, best group was about 1.5”. 30-06, 180gr Sierra sp RL22, got it under an inch finally and going to test 2 more seating depths. 257 Roberts Ackley Improved, 117gr SST H4831, finally got that combination shooting about 5/8”. And my Swiss K31 7.5x55, Berger 175gr VLD hunting RL17, shot a 3/4” group, now need to test seating depths.
Finally was able to get a bunch accomplished. Now I’ve got some more stuff to load up.
JTD
Wow! What a productive couple of days on the range. Great to see the 257 AI shooting that good. Are you done with that load?
I do believe I’m done with it. This rifle has never liked the heavier bullets, so I had to force it to like it. It has been a labor of love. After reviewing my targets, it was under 1/2”. I’m ecstatic.

You can see my micrometer setting for the Frankford Arsenal universal seating die. I still am liking it quite a bit.
JTD
Very nice! That should be an effective combination for multiple targets. Way to persevere.

Got a few 45-70 test loads done today. These were the best from Saturday, loaded again to test at 100yds, and get some velocities.

The flex tips are in full length brass to shoot out of my Siamese Mauser. The Speer FP are for my marlin guide gun.

I made up some 7.5x55 and 30-40 loads tonight. Testing seating depth on the 7.5x55 with Berger 175gr VLD, and loaded up some hunting ammo for the krag.
JTD
Here’s a new old one that I’ve never loaded for before. 7.65x53 Mauser. I’m trying 150gr Speer .311 soft points with IMR3031, IMR4064, and H4895. Using the book seating depth of 2.815”.

These are for an 1891 Argentinian Mauser, sporterized a long time ago by someone I don’t know. I picked this gem up for next to nothing at a gun show in Dallas, about 13 years ago, and never got around to messing with it, until now. Hopefully it’s got a little life left in it.

I put a few loads together for mine and I hope to shoot it soon. I think it will make a great deer rifle. I hope I can shoot the open sights decent.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...963b476ba2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...cac1622ece.jpg

I had gotten rounds loaded for the 45-90 Pedersoli Sharps. I was shooting offhand Saturday. My load was 33gr. of Shooter World Buffalo that is supposed to be AAC-5744. As an act of faith I went with this. I'm not sure about this. This Shooters World equivalent came across as faster. The chronograph should give some answers. The bullet is the Lyman 458124 running made from my usual alloy for smokeless powder. The mold is of unknown vintage coming from an estate sale. Bullets averaged slightly over 400 grains. Bullets were lubed with SPG. Accuracy with 5744 with this bullet has been very good. Hopes are to get to the range this coming week for some serious testing. It's back to blackpowder shortly. At the last range session two project rifles crapped out. One was a Handi rifle in 22-250. That gun is now a wall hanger. The other was a 788 in 22-250. Bubba had adjusted the trigger that would now not reset.
Double Post
I have read good things about buffalo rifle, but have not tried any.
What was the matter with the handi rifle?
Are you going to replace the trigger in the 788?
JTD
The Handi Rifle: The Handi rifle was cursed. Intermittent light strikes misfires was the main problem. Getting started on this mess the forend became detached. The lug had to be tact welded onto the barrel. We never could get the gun to fire a string of shots. On the last trip to the range it staring "popping open." That done it.
Some guys on another forum were skeptical thinking the entire thing was phony. I offered to send them the gun to see how they could do. No reply. Those guys were helpful but this gun got something unusual wrong. The gun was not worth the effort spent on attempting repairs.
The 788: On the 788 the trigger would not reset. The trigger did OK until no reset kicked in. It could have been Bubba who did not clean the rifle or adjusted the trigger. I have not looked at it since the problem started last week. Arrangements have been made to get the extractor replaced. Extractors going south on this guns are a problem. These sorts of problems are common in second hand guns from gun shows.
Shooters World Buffalo. Right now I suspect that the powder may be faster burning than 5744. The jury is out on that one. After some experiments with Shooters World Precision Rifle powder, I do not care to go further until there is some more data for the rounds I'm loading. So far the handgun powders have been good. Yes, I know about the Lovex data. There's No data for some of the cartridges I load.
Oh wow. Yeah, the handirifle is done.
I’m curious as to the results you get with the shooters world powder.

I've been struggling with my Granddaughters 6.5×50 Japanese for some time . I have some loads that are showing promise . The biggest thing is that dies really aren't very close to the actual chamber . I aquired Hornady universal neck dies in 6.5 and 270 as the needed ID is .271 , I had high hopes the 270 would over size as the 6.5 die took necks down to .261 , much like the FL dies . No such luck . Bushing dies skipped over everything even close . I'm shooting cast bullets and paper patched at .272+ , the groove dia is over .268 closer to .269 . The rifle was made in 1927 so it's nearly a century old and started out .268 .
A gentleman on another forum offered to make me a bushing for a neck die ......among other things I don't have a bushing neck die ...... He instead knocked out a die body and 3 bushings to get me the .271 neck ID desired . It's a hobby thing not a business . So no props or ads .Attachment 1735
I did an initial some of these , those , that one , sized to what I had on hand to get close ,40 rounds @5 each just to see where I should be going , I can't even call them work ups really . The 3" 50 yd group with the 266469 sized .265 and patched back up to .274 dry looked pretty good when compared to the first group at 42" with a 280??? sized .277 .
With closer to proper neck dia and correct size dies for the bullets I'm hoping I can get it under 3" at 100 .
Honestly I think my eyes and the issue sights are going to be the killer on this one .
Load data for jackets is basically pick a flavor of 4831 scoop the case full shake enough out to seat a bullet done . Ballard and 5R rifling worked out the Metford and being 1-9.5 may prove more challenging for full house loads .
The sad part is Dad gave $125 for the rifle and 25 more for most of 2 boxes of Norma factory ammo and I have 2 sets of dies at $30 each , 2 universal neck dies , a trim die , Hornady universal 6.5 inline seater (it was paired with the 6.5 neck die) at $12 ea . A custom push through sizer , custom H&I die , and the custom bushing neck die with 3 bushings ...... I gave a box of .375 gas checks aquired in a trade for the bullet sizers and a paltry $20 for the bushing die and bushings . I have as much in getting some loaded ammo with cast bullets as he paid for the rifle going in .
I will . I have a couple of obscure out of print cartridges that need to be more net searchable .
What obscurities do you have?
JTD
I have a 7.7 to go with the 6.5 , a 32 Rem , 11mm Chessipot , 45 S&W .
Not invisible so much as not popular I guess .
The 32 Rem shares data with 32 Win Special but it looks like a rimless AI with a Weatherby shoulder and about .03 shorter .
The Chessipot is a paper cartridge bolt action single shot . Mine has an 1871 issue stamp on the stock . Lots of information available just not on an average Joe level .
45 S&W aka Schofield isn't really an oddity load data boils down to 45 ACP data in a 1.10 case length , shorter than the 1.28 Colts . I don't have a Schofield pistol but I do have a bubba'd 1917 S&W reamer to head space the Schofield case on the mouth . So it will eventually get some P+ loads . Which sounds bad but the OM design is for a 12 kpsi cartridge and I plan on hopping it up to like 18 kpsi ......a 250 gr SWC about 950-975 fps in a 5" DA with target sights . Well inside the 21kpsi design of the 1918 built N frame .
Very cool stuff you have there.

Finally had a moment to sit at the bench this morning. Between work, and my kids football and marching band, life has been hectic.
I loaded up some test loads for the kids’ hunting rifles. 7x57 with 139gr Hornady interlocks and IMR4320. 7.62x54R with 180gr Speer RN and IMR4064 and W760.
Hunting season is just around the corner, and they are excited.
