45-70 with 300gr nosler ballistic tips

I just recently scoped my enfield no1 mk3 in 45-70. I’ve got some nosler 300gr orange tipped ballistic tips I got from Wes awhile back, so I figured what the hell, here we go.

I talked to Nosler, and they said this is the same bullet they use in their sabot muzzle loader rounds, and that optimum impact velocity is 1200fps to 1800fps. So I pulled 3 loads out of the Hornady book that are supposed to be going 1800fps. IMR 3031, RL7, and my personal 45-70 favorite IMR4198.

You can run these about 1950-2000 for the trajectory if you need to.

Where I hunt, 150yds is a long shot. Most shots are around 75yds. If I can launch them accurately at 1800fps I should be good to go.

So far my best group has been 2.3” @ 100yds with IMR4198. I noticed while I was at the range that my scope has about six inches of parallax at that distance. I’m going to put a different scope on before I test again.

I ended up putting a Leupold VX3, 1.5-5x20, on my rifle. Took it to the range today. I tested the 300gr Ballistic tip with IMR4198. Initially, 41.0gr of 4198 gave me about 3” group. So I started at 42.0 and went up in 1gr increments up to 45.0. 42.0gr was terrible, 43.0gr was 1.18”, 44.0gr was 1.6”, and 45.0gr was terrible. I’m going to test 43.0gr again, and if it gives similar results, I will call it good.

Thanks. If it wasn’t a 45-70, I probably wouldn’t own one. 45-70 is my favorite caliber.

Those are some pretty rounds. I liked loading those bullets in 458 socom, but never tried them on anything other than paper and bowling pins.

I’m hoping to shoot something with these this fall/winter. I will post up a follow up if it happens.

I re tested 43.0gr Imr 4198 and tested 43.5gr as well. Both shot just under 1.5”. The 43.0gr load is averaging 1875fps and the 43.5gr loaf is 1910fps. I think I am going to stick with the 43.0gr load.
